Simone now understood fear. It was one thing to hear or read about situations such as these, but it was another to truly experience it. The terror that had advanced into her bones with an aching need to act as it seeped into her bloodstream was now slowly running through her entire body. She couldn’t even describe how time seemed to have slowed down. It was as if nothing else existed except the two of them in this desperate longing to live.

“I’m not ready,” Simone whispered, refusing to look up at Aaron and meet his knowing eyes. She stared at the small copper lead and wondered how something so delicate could be so lethal. “I want a dog. I know that sounds crazy, but I want a dog that greets me every night at the door and loves me unconditionally. I want marriage with a man who will challenge me and love me like no one else could. I want children to raise and the ability to show them the meaning of this life that has been so graciously given to us. Aaron, I am so afraid to connect this jumper and have all of that taken away in an instant. I don’t want our families to grieve. I don’t want Kelley to suffer any more than she already has and if I do this wrong, I’m taking away her brother that has given his life to ensure she lives hers to the fullest. I didn’t understand your need to do that three years ago, but facing what we’re facing right now gives me considerable insight into what you’re willing to do for those that you love. If this is what you face every day when you walk out that door, your dedication is something to be cherished and I won’t throw that away.”

“I recognize and appreciate what you’re going through right now.” Simone finally looked up through her tears to find that Aaron was watching her closely. It shouldn’t have taken something like this to clarify the precious lives they’d been given. There was compassion written across his features and she felt a desperate need to remain like this for as long as she could. Unfortunately, he wasn’t going to allow her that time. “I will be the one to deliver that puppy to you, but you first have to do exactly what I say. Now blink those tears away.”

Simone nodded and then waited until she had herself under control before focusing once again on the colored wire she now held between her fingers. She wasn’t sure how she was keeping her hands steady when every other part of her was shaking like a leaf. There was no more delaying the inevitable.

“Tell me what to do.”

“Just attach the jumper wire to the exposed lead while ensuring that the teeth of the alligator clip are in contact with the exposed copper conductor.”

“Okay.” Simone sounded a hell of a lot more confident than she felt, but she’d always faced things head-on.
